Rumi Galleries and the Salmon Run Project
Wednesday, June 22, 2011
Rumi Galleries is proud to be participating in the Salmon Run Project, a creative collaboration between the City of Mississauga Culture Division and the Art Gallery of Mississauga.
Last February, the Art Gallery of Mississauga sent out an open call for proposals: how would you celebrate Mississauga's Annual Credit River Salmon Run using a fibreglass cast of a salmon. Twenty-four artists were selected, and their salmon art is now available for viewing from June 11th to September 30th in various locations along the Credit River in Port Credit and Streetsville.
Rumi Galleries recently received its salmon entitled Salmo Solar, by artist Stephen Cruise, which is now on display to the public in the main gallery. We invite you to visit us and the Salmon as we celebrate the beginning of Summer.

MARK JEFFREY - ARTIST DRAWN TO MOMENTS IN TIME - MISSISSAUGA NEWS
Sunday, May 01, 2011
Many artists like their subjects on a grand scale. They believe, perhaps erroneously, that it adds a sense of monumentalism to their work.
Not, however, Mark Jeffrey, who embraces small subjects — but makes them large in meaning.
“I’m drawn to moments in time. I hope that my art captures the essence of these moments ... happy, sad, everyday things,” said the Oakville artist, whose exhibition, aptly titled “In the Moment,” opens today (Saturday, April 30) at Rumi Galleries in Port Credit.
Jeffrey succeeds in his goal admirably. The 40-odd paintings in the show depict ordinary everyday occurrences such as pond hockey, winter walks and raking leaves. Then he goes one step further and complements the art with titles that are just as evocative: Their Stanley Cup, A Crisp Day, The Happiest Leaf Raker I Ever Knew, The Tale of the Apple Thief, Yesterday’s Sandcastles, One Day I’ll Go Back! ...
“I’m drawn to (these moments) and I worry that they will be lost as we move forward,” he said.
Not surprisingly, Jeffrey lists among his influences Tom Thomson, the Canadian artist of the early 20th century, who directly influenced the Canadian painters who would come to be known as the Group of Seven. Jeffrey’s work also echoes that of another of his favourites, Vincent van Gogh, the Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work is known for its vivid colours and emotional impact.
Jeffrey, 49, took to the easel some 18 years ago.
“I always felt the need to do something creative, but never really did much about it,” said the self-taught artist. The proverbial lightbulb, he said, went off following a brush with illness.
“At that point I realized I had to make time to paint,” he said.
Which he still does, though, he still holds down a full-time job.
Because he’s not burdened down with academic constraints, Jeffrey allows his art to take him wherever it will.
“Lots of my paintings are done from my imagination. I just let them happen,” he said.
Some of Jeffrey’s work are inspired by a sense of loss. And, living in fast-developing Oakville, he witnesses that loss on a daily basis. Out Back, for example, shows three young shinny players on a tiny pond dwarfed by a backdrop of tall buildings.
“There are no more rolling meadows. They’re paving over everything,” he laments.
Still, when viewing Jeffrey’s work, the sense is one of overarching joy. His love of painting shines through, no matter how sombre his subject.
Perhaps, too, it’s because he’s sort of a poetic soul.
“When I was 7, I thought if I threw a rock hard enough, I could hit the moon. When I was 7, I thought that reindeer could fly. When I was 7, I thought my dog would never die. When I was 7, 8 came too soon,” he writes on his website (www.markjeffrey.ca).
Says Charlotte Rumi, who brought Jeffrey to her gallery: “Mark has a unique style that’s very Canadian. He deserves to be recognized for his good work.”
Rumi Galleries is located at 55 Woodlawn Ave. The exhibition runs to May 14. Go to www.rumigalleries.com to view Jeffrey’s work.

Diverse Collection at Port Credit Gallery - Mississauga News
Wednesday, July 28, 2010
Some may be shocked to know that an original Andy Warhol painting was in the possession, albeit briefly, of a Mississauga gallery.
The pop art visionary's painting of The Rolling Stones' vocalist Mick Jagger was acquired by Rumi Antiques & Fine Art in Port Credit from a local collector who had the 1975 painting in his collection. A day later, it was snapped up by one of Rumi's clients.
"We had a gentleman in mind and he came by, took one look at it and immediately said he wanted it," said Joseph Rumi, the gallery's director of fine art. "The top-end pieces tend to move quickly because the collectors recognize what an opportunity it is."
Rumi Antiques & Fine Art, which opened in 1981 and has been operating in Mississauga since 1991, specializes in contemporary and historic art as well as antiques ranging from the 17th to 20th century. Rumi has been with the company - started by his parents, Richard and Charlotte - for three years and with an education that includes a master's in art business from Sotheby's Institute of Art in London, England, he wanted to focus on the art side of the business.
"My dad and I joke that he covers the floors and I cover the walls," said Rumi, adding his early introduction to art from his family nurtured a life-long passion.
Currently, the gallery has pieces by Group of Seven artist Alexander Young Jackson as well as Charles Gagnon, Painters Eleven member and longtime Port Credit resident Thomas Hodgson and Rita Letendre. However, it also carries works by contemporary artists such as Mark Jeffrey and Mississauga's Sonja Hidas.
"Personally, I believe it's just as important to look for artists in our community as well as nationally and internationally," said Rumi. "It seems we're lacking a historical art culture in Mississauga and with Toronto having so many great galleries, we wanted to bring that out to the 905."
The majority of their clients are from Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area. One of the goals of opening the gallery in Mississauga was to make fine art accessible for 905ers.
"It's a lot easier to come to Port Credit than Toronto," said Rumi. "There aren't that many galleries that have historical and contemporary art as well as antiques under one roof. I think if you asked if you could find an A.Y. Jackson in Mississauga, most people would probably say no."
The bright and open gallery is meant to be inviting, said Rumi. "We wanted to move away from looking at antiques in a cluttered space and to give people the chance to step back and take (the piece) in," he said. "When it comes to antiques, many people feel it's almost like looking at a museum piece. These things (antiques) were meant to be used."
Most of the gallery's pieces come from private collections, auctions and other collectors. They also offer a broker service for private collectors. As well, it offers fine art and antique restoration and conservation, consultations and estate and insurance appraisals as well as framing.
